Parents of adult children

Your children are grown. The relationship can still be hard.

Parenting does not stop mattering when a child becomes an adult. But the role changes—and that change can bring worry, conflict, grief, uncertainty, and questions without easy answers.

Care and control can become difficult to separate.

You may worry constantly about your adult child's choices, step in before they ask, or keep helping well beyond what feels sustainable. You may struggle to say no because the relationship feels at stake.

Perhaps your child has pulled away, criticized you, established boundaries you do not understand, or made choices that frighten you. None of this automatically means that either of you is the villain—or that estrangement is inevitable. It does mean the old ways of relating may no longer fit.

The central question

How do I stay connected to my adult child without trying to manage their life—or abandoning myself in the process?

A relationship between two adults.

We can look with honesty and compassion at overparenting and overfunctioning: what they accomplish in the short term, what they cost, and what fear appears when you consider stepping back.

The work may include establishing healthier boundaries, tolerating the discomfort of changing an old role, and grieving the relationship you expected or once had. It can also involve learning to let your adult child have their own feelings and choices while you remain responsible for yours.

The aim is not detachment or indifference. It is a relationship increasingly based on two adults relating to one another—with care, limits, accountability, and room for difference.

RECOGNIZE

The old role

Notice rescuing, anticipating, advising, over-helping, or taking responsibility for keeping the relationship intact.

TOLERATE

The discomfort

Make space for guilt, worry, or disapproval without letting those feelings automatically choose your next move.

RELATE

Adult to adult

Practice clearer requests, sustainable limits, genuine listening, and respect for each person's agency.

A different way forward

You can care deeply without carrying everything.
